2011-2012 School year

General Policies

The main intent of mathematics instruction at the secondary level is for students to develop mathematical proficiency that will enable them to efficiently use mathematics to make sense of and improve the world around them (see UEN's website for more information on class specific objectives. http://www.uen.org/core/).

Materials needed every class period:

  • Pencil and erasers
  • Paper
  • Calculator (scientific calculator)
  • Algebra notebook (3 ring binder; with plenty of loose leaf collage ruled paper)
  • McDougal Littell math book
  • Attitude for learning
  • These items are needed for learning new material and preparing for homework.  An expectation point will be deducted from citizenship if materials are not brought to class.

Student and Teacher Responsibilities:

As a class we will work together to maintain five classroom norms, or expectations. We will discuss as a class how to accomplish these.

  1. Maintain a focused and fun atmosphere.
  2. Approach class with an attitude of safety and respect.
  3. Make classroom time effective by being prepared.
  4. Maintain personal integrity.
  5. No food or drink (water only).
Consequences for not maintaining classroom norms are:
  1. An expectation point will be taken away. If sheet is not brought to class a point will be taken off of homework assignment.

  2. Student will be pulled away from situation.

  3. Student is sent to a cooperation teacher.

  4. Student is sent to the office, a parent will be notified.

Homework:

There will be some time to work on homework in class; however unfinished homework will have to be done at home.  Homework must be done in pencil.  And it must be done according to designated standards. It must be handed in the day it is due.  Late work will be accepted with a penalty of up to 50% off the final score.  As the term ends there will be a deadline and late work will no longer be accepted, students will be informed of the late work deadline and will be posted on my website.

Absent Work:

Students are expected to complete all assignments.  At the beginning of each week student will write the assignments for that week in their notebooks.  Absent work must be turned in within a week of the student’s return to school.  If a student knows in advance they will be gone they may fill out a request form and receive available work before they leave. You may also check skyward or my website for missing assignments my website.

Tests:

Each chapter will contain a unit test. The tests covers the concepts learned in class as well as in the homework.   A student with an excused absence must take the make-up test in the homework center within one week of returning to school.  Students may re-take tests if they get a failing score.  The make-up/re-take test may be different than the test given in class.  There will be a comprehensive exam in May.  It is strongly suggested that students keep all tests and notes to study for this exam.

Evaluation:

Grades should reflect a student’s learning, effort, and participation. Student’s efforts will be earned on a point system.  The grade breakdown, based on percentages, is as follows:

A         94-100%
A-        90- 93%
B+        87- 89%
B          83- 86%
B-         80- 82%
C+        77- 79%
C          73- 76%
C-         70- 72%
D+        67- 69%
D          63- 66%
D-         60- 62%
F/I         0- 60%

Attendance and Tardy Policy:

Learning is a constant assimilation of new knowledge and experiences into each student’s unique way of viewing the world.  If students are absent, they miss out on important concepts they will not achieve as well as if they were present.  Similarly, we will begin math learning as soon as the bell rings, it is imperative that students be on time and well prepared.  The tardy policy is outlined in the Timberline Middle School student handbook and will be followed.

In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act,
students needing special accommodations
may contact me for arrangements.

Parental Involvement:

Many studies agree that parental involvement is crucial to a child’s success in school.  Please check the Skyward website regularly to view your child’s progress.  You are welcome to come and see me at anytime.  You are welcome to contact me by e-mail (nitawood@alpine.k12.ut.us) or by phone 763-7005 ext 110.  If there is anything I can do to help your child succeed, it would be a joy to discuss these ideas with you.

If you are filling the survey late

I will only be checking the results weekly

There may be a delay of when it shows up on Skyward

Thank you for completing the Survey -- Better Late than Never!
